On Characters and Marketing

Pickin_Murder-3I published my second cozy, Pickin’ Murder, today. It tells the continuing adventures of the Spoon Sisters, my two heroines in the Antique Hunters Mystery series. Anne and CC travel to Nashville to search for musical antiques and a murderer who is stalking them.

Seems kind of crazy as the first book, Murder by the Spoonful, only published a few months ago, and I am still trying to build an audience. Actually, marketing the book for me has been more challenging than writing it. Rather surprising because I used to be a full-time marketer. I wrote press releases, marketing copy and web copy for universities, hospitals and a social service agency. I still do some marketing for the medical journal where I work.

I have been reaching out to other author friends to find out what they do. Now I’m involved in a one-day only Facebook event, Mystery Writers Reveal. Scheduled for next Saturday, September 12, thirty mystery writers will be talking about their work during the day. All Kindle books will be marked down to .99 cents for the day, and there will be giveaways. I will be participating with fellow author Sheila Odom Hollinghead at noon eastern on Saturday. Drop by on Facebook, ask questions. We are not sure what to expect but hope it will be an interesting conversation.

They are including me in their annual fall festival featuring antique appraisers, artists and specials throughout the day. I will be there when they open at 11:30 a.m. If you live in the Chicago area, stop by. I’d love to meet you, and I hope the real Spoon Sisters will be there.

It’s nice to take a break from writing to meet readers and other authors. I have felt very welcome by this group and others.
